Controversial book destroyed by MoD

The Ministry of Defence has bought and pulped all of the first edition of a book which is highly critical of their mission in Afghanistan. It has cost them around £150,000.

The book is called Dead Man Risen, and its author Toby Hamden was best friends with the highest ranking soldier to be killed in Afghanistan, Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe. Thorneloe was commander of the Welsh Guards, and passed on a lot of information about the problems the British forces are facing to Hamden, such as the lack of first class equipment.

In the book there are descriptions of civilian death at the hands of the British forces. Particular passages about a farmer killed by missile, six children killed by a 500lb bomb, and another five children killed by another 500lb bomb are highly emotive with the potential to cause the MoD great embarrassment.

It also describes the controversy of Afghan soldiers taking six Taliban as captives and instead of charging them, they executed three and kneecapped the other three, making them crawl to their base to show their superiors what would happen to them if they laid mines. According to the book, the British carried out a half-hearted inquiry into the incident but nothing came of it.

Hamden also has the confirmation of another British officer, Rob Gallimore, that these events took place. The MoD has issued a statement claiming the books were destroyed because they contained information which could cause security problems for the troops in Afghanistan.
