Crackdown on yobs and drunks turns Magaluf into family friendly hotspot

Magaluf Punta BallenaA crackdown on bad behaviour is paying dividends for the Spanish resort town of Magaluf. Measures introduced two years ago banned alcohol consumption on the streets and gave the Guardia Civil more powers to deal with misbehaving tourists.

Magaluf authorities also increased budgets for security and Guardia Civil personnel now maintain a high-visibility presence to help keep order. The street of Punta Ballena is the epicentre of Magaluf’s nightlife. Guardia Civil officers have upped the number of patrols they make here.

Hotel and entertainment venue operators welcomed the crackdown when it was launched. They said it would help Magaluf lose its infamous reputation as the binge-drinking capital of Spain for young Britons and other Europeans.

They noted that less drink would cut down on the number of drunken confrontations and the unwelcome sight of inebriated tourists having sex in public places. Magaluf Hotel Association president Sebastian Darder said his members were pleased with the results of the new regulations and noted the town’s streets were safer and more suitable for families now.

Magaluf is located on the south coast of Majorca. Tourist authorities on the island say the visitor demographic has changed since the crackdown was inaugurated. In 2013, a good 30 per cent of the tourists arriving in Magaluf were young tourists.

According to the latest figures, the percentage has dropped to 22. The number of families and couples has created a seesaw effect. The number of people in this grouping has jumped by 13 per since 2013 and they now make up a 70 per cent chunk of the total number of visitors.
