Cruise ship breakdown a boon for Auckland businesses

The P&O cruise ship Aurora, on a round-the-world voyage, stayed docked in Auckland this past week while its propeller shaft was being repaired.

Retailers in the northern island’s largest city were pleased as the ship’s passengers visited the shops and other businesses throughout the city during their extended stay.

A propeller shaft bearing failed not long after the Aurora left Sydney, and the ship’s port engine had to be shut down for most of the sailing across the Tasman Sea.

After the repairs were completed, the Aurora was expected to leave Auckland on Wednesday.

A local business leader commented to stuff.nz.com: “The good news is with their extended stay, our retailers are getting some of these beautiful people out of their shell suits and into some designer fashion.”

Due to the extended stay in Auckland, stops at Wellington and Napier, in New Zealand, had to be cancelled, as did visits to the islands of Moorea and Papeete in Tahiti.

After leaving Auckland, the Aurora will sail to Honolulu directly, and then to San Francisco and Southampton, in England on its 93-night round-the-world voyage.
