In conjunction with eBay, the online auction site, Delta Airlines are offering their passengers the chance to surf the net for free while onboard their planes. The airline has approximately 260 jets that are equipped with wireless internet access and they expect one million passengers could benefit from the free offer on their 1,000 flights a day. Delta is the largest operator in the world of wireless internet aboard aircrafts and this service through the busy holiday period is sure to put happy faces on the people flying with them.
The director of customer experience, Ranjan Goswami, said they are always looking at ways they can help make flying more enjoyable to their customers. This is the first time the airline has been able to offer in-flight internet access via a sponsor to their customers, but is hoping for many more great offers in the future. While up in the air passengers can surf the entire internet with eBay obviously being the homepage. This is the latest innovation on entertainment on planes and new planes are being designed to have plug points for laptops and PDAs.
A lot of airlines have been looking at ways they can reduce costs of aviation and many are now seeing a growing number of passengers coming aboard with their own entertainment. This has made plane manufacturers and airlines think about the possibility of scrapping TV monitors in the head rest to save weight, fuel and cost. Internet on planes is the next evolutionary step for entertainment while flying, you could possibly even check-in for that onward flight the next day.
