Delta halts sale of preferred seats in economy

When it began selling preferred seats in the economy class cabin at a premium price, many of Delta Air Lines’ elite fliers complained that they could no longer book the seats without charge, and the world’s largest airline responded by discontinuing the practice, according to a company spokesperson.

Late in October, the Atlanta-based airline announced a new policy of selling better seats in coach to economy-class customers at a $5-25 premium, depending on the seat location and the distance traveled. These “coach choice seats” comprised under 10 percent of all available seat assignments on Delta flights, the carrier reported at that time.

In an e-mail sent on Monday to all elite fliers, the vice president of loyalty programs for the airline, Jeff Robertson, acknowledged that some Delta Medallion members were upset that the policy meant they no longer had access to these seats without charge.

He stated in the e-mail: “Retaining your long-term loyalty is of paramount importance to us, and we’re not afraid to change course when we need to. Simply put: Medallion members will be able to book any of the seats you used to enjoy at the time of booking and without a charge.”
