Details for Prince William and Catherine’s Trips to Canada and US

Duke and Duchess of CambridgeThe Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are due to tour Canada at the end of the month and then visit California in the US in early July. Until now, not too many details of what they will do in the US were available. Now we know that the highlight of the California visit will be a BAFTA black-tie reception on July 9 at the Belasco theatre in Los Angeles, where the couple will promote British creative talent among the television, film and video game worlds.

According to St James’s Palace officials, the newlywed couple will only take a small group of Royal Household staff to help them during the trip, which will last a total of 11 days. Prince William and Catherine want to keep their entourage as small as they can while still having enough support for the Duchess, as this will be her first official trip overseas as a member of the royal family. She is said to have forfeited taking a dresser with her, but she will take James Pryce, her hairdresser along.

Others that will be joining the couple from the royal household include their private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, assistant private secretary Chris Keeley, press secretary Miguel Head, and Patrick Harrison, the press secretary for Charles, Prince of Wales (William’s father), as well as adviser and aide Sir David Manning and another secretary. Catherine is said not to be taking a lady-in-waiting either, so the secretaries will likely take on some of those duties, like collecting flowers or gifts. There will also be staff at the official buildings where she is staying to assist her.

During the North America tour, Prince William will be giving several speeches and addresses, but the Duchess won’t be speaking publicly. Lowther-Pinkerton stressed that this trip will involve the Duke and Duchess participating in engagements together. There is a time and place to choose when to introduce yourself to the public speaking world. Although Catherine has amazed everyone with how she’s handled the transition into the royal family, they don’t want to rush her into anything. If there is a place for her to speak, she will, he added, but she will want to really know what she’s talking about.

During the July 8-10 California visit, the Duke and Duchess will stay at the British consul-general’s home in the Hancock Park district of LA. Lowther-Pinkerton says that the couple will be supporting the UK’s interests through the prism of their own interests. They will support UK technology investment and creative industries through BAFTA, which William is the president of, he added, as well as highlight the relationship between the armed forces of both countries with a particular focus on the next step of reintegrating service men and women into civilian life when they have completed their active duties.
