Disney Plans a Prequel to the Wizard of Oz Starring Rachel Weisz

Rachel WeiszWhen people are talking about classic movies, one of the first ones that comes to mind is, of course, the “Wizard of Oz.” This movie has gone down in history as a classic and has been loved for generations. However, it now seems that Disney wants to take this story a step further and give people the back story to the classic.

According to reports, Disney is currently in talks with Rachel Weisz to play one of the wicked witches. Her sister will be played by Mila Kiunis, or at least that is what rumors are leading people to believe. However, just who will play which witch has yet to be announced.

This leaves a lot of questions unanswered. First of all, what is the name of this prequel? Second of all, who do you get to direct a prequel to one of the most loved classic stories of all time? Well if rumors are anything to go buy, Disney already has the ball rolling on this story, which will take place before the classic L. Frank Baum story.

The name of the prequel as of now will be, “Oz, the Great and Powerful.” The movie is going to be produced by none other than Joe Roth, who is the same producer from the movie “Alice in Wonderland.” The film itself is going to be directed by Sam Raimi, who is known for directing such movies as “Spider Man.” If these rumors are true, then these are some pretty powerful names to be working together on one movie. However, people have come to expect nothing less from Disney.

Of course, nothing is set in stone just yet. In fact, the deal with Rachel Weisz is still up in the air, according to some reports. However, Disney does have her name on the table for one of the witches. Of course, it is important to note that some of Disney’s other plans for this movie have already fell through. In fact, Robert Downey Jr was expected to play the wizard in this movie. Those negotiations never came to be.

Now the biggest question is: Why does this movie have so many big name stars fighting to be a part of it? Well pretty much, actors are starting to see that working with certain “classics” can lead to being part of a big hit. Just look at the success of “Alice in Wonderland.” This movie was able to make more than $1 billion worldwide.

The plans for this movie are still in the very early stages. In fact, Disney is still casting for the movie. That being said, experts say that “Oz, the Great and Powerful” is not expected to come out until 2013 at the soonest.
