The Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) has changed it advice for persons wishing to visit Greece. There is now a section that warns fancy dress costumes may offend local people. The new note headed under local laws and customs states that, ‘’some fancy dress costumes may offend the local Greek authorities and be considered as contravening decency laws.’
This is believed to have come about after an incident in May when 17 British men were arrested and taken to court dressed as nuns. The men aged between 18 and 65 were arrested for offending the Catholic community and kept locked up for the night before ending up in court the next day still in their fancy dress.
“It’s the start of the tourist season and we wanted to send a message that such antics won’t be tolerated. They were drunk and provocative and so we pulled them in. We won’t be putting up with this sort of pandemonium any longer,” said the police chief of Crete, Dimitris Makroyiannis.
The charges were later dropped against the group as no witnesses would testify against them. The guys, all from the Bristol area were also wearing ladies underwear under their robes.
There are roughly 1.7 million tourists each year from Britain that head to Greece, many for the idyllic islands that will have to be careful if any dressing up is going to be done.
