A driver who rented a Ferrari to attend a wedding crashed and wrote the vehicle off in Luton last Sunday. The unnamed 29-year-old driver had hired the £220,000 458 Italia from Shoreham-by-Sea based luxury car rental supplier Prestige Lifestyle the previous Thursday.
The accident occurred at around 19:00 on the Sunday evening in the Bedfordshire town. Insurance assessors said it looked like the driver had first rammed a terraced house before ploughing under a Volkswagen mini-cab. Fortunately, the car did not injure anybody in the collision and even the driver was saved by the airbags deploying.
Prestige Lifestyle director Jamie Ford said the assessors took just three minutes to declare the Ferrari was a write-off. He continued by saying the car was that badly damaged he was amazed it took them so long. He noted that the vehicle had only clocked up 4,600 miles and he was really gutted that it had been written off.
Mr Ford said drivers needed to understand that super-cars were powerful and also that they were not indestructible. He finished off by saying that cars of this genre needed handling with the utmost respect.
Staff at Prestige Lifestyle’s Shoreham depot said the hirer paid £850 a day to hire the 200mph Ferrari plus another £5,000 deposit for damages. Sources close to the firm’s management say the driver can wave goodbye to the deposit.
Witnesses say the accident occurred on a fairly quiet residential street and the driver also clipped a Vauxhall Astra before ramming the taxi. A Bedfordshire police force spokesperson said late last week that nobody had been charged with any crime as a result of the accident.
