DVSA launches new and revamped UK driving tests

l plateThe UK’s Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) inaugurated its new driving test yesterday. Hailed as the test to assess the skills of 21st century learner drivers, the revamped product includes sections on using satnavs and backing into car park spaces.

The DVSA tweaked the test to reflect the changes in modern day road use. Research had revealed the root cause of 25 per cent of all accidents on the UK’s roads was distractions. The addition of satnav usage is designed to acclimatise learner drivers to being distracted and also to use the devices.

The length of independent drive time in the tests has been doubled to 20 minutes and requires the examinee to use road signs to drive to a given destination. Examinees could also be asked to turn on the likes of heated rear windows or wipers while on the move.

The curses of many a former learner, three-point turns and reversing round corners, have been consigned to the history books. To replace these manoeuvres, learners will be asked to carry out one of three actions. These are reversing into a parking bay, parking in a space on a city street or parking on the wrong side of the road and then safely getting back into traffic.

The introduction of the new test coincided with a planned change to the working rules of examiners. The Public and Commercial Service Union said the new rules plus the revamped tests would create more work for examiners and called a strike. The DVSA claimed that despite the strike more than 90 per cent of yesterday’s driving tests were conducted as scheduled.
