Dzeko double gets City off to flying start

Edin Dzeko scored his first two goals for Manchester City to help his team achieve a 3-0 win against Aris Salonika in the Europa League.

City were made to suffer a 0-0 draw last week in their first leg, but recent £27m January signing slotted the hosts ahead before curling his second in soon after.

When Mario Balotelli’s shot hit the post, ex-Barcelona man Toure fired home to wrap up a 3-0 aggregate victory. City will next face Dynamo Kiev after the Ukranians beat Besiktas 8-1.

If City can maintain their levels of performance that managed to put Aris well out of contention in just 13 minutes, they should be more than confident of being able to reach the quarter-finals. Coach Roberto Mancini holds the belief that a strong and meaningful run in the Europa tournament will provide the best preparation next season’s Champions League, providing City qualify.

However, his side should certainly expect to face tougher examinations despite Aris sometimes playing with the swagger of an outfit that already belongs at Europe’s top table.

Mancini should take a huge share of the credit due to the way his positive formation, which starred just one holding midfielder, as opposed to the usual two, managed to crush Aris with a three-pronged strike attack of youngsters Dzeko and Balotelli, in addition to Carlos Tevez. While out injured, Italian Balotelli boasted that such a trio will become the best in world football and already overshadows that of FC Barcelona – widely considered to be the best team in the game at the moment.
