E-book sales overtake hard copies sales, reports Amazon

The e-book has swept past another two milestones as it ferociously advances upon the main players of literary culture.

The Man Booker prize has embraced the digital era and Amazon has recently announced that Kindle sales have over taken paperback sales in the US. Publishes who are putting forward books for this year’s Man Booker prize, worth £50,000 are being requested to submit works in digital format, as well as physical books.

This year the judging panel includes Matthew d’Ancona, Susan Hill, and politician Chris Mullin. Head of books for the Daily Telegraph, Gaby Wood, is also on the panel of judges which is being chaired by Stella Rimington former M15 chief. Each have been given e-readers and will use them to prepare the longlist for 2011, which they will announce in July. The move means that this year the judges will not have to haul around a back-breaking numbers of books.

Ion Trewin, the administrator for Man Booker said that it was traditional to rely on hard copies and proofs, but this year if publishers could supply electronic copies earlier than the deadlines, it would help greatly as time was of the essence. He added that the Kindle will not take over from prints but will allow for another way of reading. Feedback from the judges regarding the e-reader has so far been wonderful, according to Mr Trewin.
