East Coast Scotland England route to be squashed
Posted on: November 9th, 2009 by Samantha WilliamsThe nationalised East Coast Mainline that runs between Glasgow and London’s King cross is looking likely to be cut back to Edinburgh from December of next year. The move will have to go to public consultations according to the government, but one watchdog group, Passenger Focus, is looking for reassurance that the route will continue. The leader of the SNP, Alex Salmond, has voiced his anger at the latest rumours after just heavily criticising the way the Scottish Government have scrapped the Glasgow Airport Rail Link (GARL).
Mr Salmond said this was just another move by Labour that did not take into account the people of Glasgow. The route is a major one for tourism and business to the area and the withdrawal of the service will reflect badly on them as he believes they take Glasgow and its residents for granted. Lord Adonis, the transport secretary for Labour, agreed with Salmond over the wrongful closure of the GARL. However first minister Salmond noted what Adonis had said and then showed it was his same government that were trying to shut it down.
The Labour Government were quick to deny any knowledge of the proposed closure of the Glasgow-London link. Lord Adonis has stated that he has had no information about changes to the rail link and puts it down to the SNP trying to start up their political campaign again. London’s Euston to Glasgow are not to be affected but towns and cities on the east coast may not fare as well.
