East Midlands Airport trials alternative fuel
Posted on: November 11th, 2009 by Peter HeadleyFor the next six months east Midland Airport will trial a liquid biomethane fuel called Gasrec, on their buses they use to transfer passengers to and from planes. It will be the first time in the world that a carbon neutral fuel has been used at an airport. The gas used is the byproduct of biomass waste like food and other organic materials. Potentially bad gases for the environment are taken away for the fuel and are made into less harmful products and can be used instead of natural gas and liquid gas.
East Midlands Airport is aiming to be carbon neutral by 2012 and are already half way to their target. This latest move will see their carbon footprint greatly reduced and put them well ahead of their timeline. All support vehicles and the energy used from their operational buildings will all be offset in their plans and be the world’s first. The carbon neutral targets are obviously those that are in their direct control and not planes. Over the six month period they will compare the biomethane vehicles with diesel vehicles to see which will work the best.
The airport is streets ahead of others and uses such environmentally saving ideas like rain water for waste water, heat from boreholes and energy efficient light bulbs throughout the airport. An airport spokesperson said they have always considered their surrounding at the impact they have. This aim for 2012 shows how committed they are to saving the environment.
