Easyjet denies plan to bid on Gatwick airport

Easyjet is saying that reports about its planning to join a bid for Gatwick airport are incorrect.

The low-cost airline released the statement following media reports that indicated it was in talks with Virgin Atlantic to prepare a joint bid to buy the airport.

A spokesman for Easyjet has said, however, that the reports were incorrect.

“We have no plans to form or front a bid. At the most, we were considering offering an as-yet unidentified bidder some sort of long-term commitment on capacity at the airport to enable them to evaluate their bid,” he clarified.

The spokesman noted that Easyjet was one of several companies that Virgin had approached.

A Virgin Atlantic spokesman said last week: “Virgin Atlantic is in talks with Easyjet about the possibility of a bid for Gatwick Airport. We have previously said we are interested in forming a consortium to own and operate the airport, and are currently in talks with interested parties.”

BAA, the owner of Gatwick and several other UK airports, has indicated that it hopes to sell the airport for £2.5 billion as its looks for ways to reduce the criticism it has received about holding a monopoly on London-area airport operations.

Experts are saying that £1.5 billion is a more realistic figure given the current state of the economy.
