Budget airline Easyjet is displeased with the High Court after they decided not to order a review into passenger charges at Gatwick Airport. The low-cost airline claims that travellers will pay 50 per cent more in additional charges over the next few years.
In March 2008 the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) published its price controls for 2008 through to 2013. Gatwick’s price was levied at ?6.79 per passenger to assist in, “essential modernisation and improvements in services,” an increase of 21 per cent compared to end of year 31st March 2008.
“Today’s decision highlights two important issues. Firstly, it demonstrates that passengers must be protected from the monopoly powers of Gatwick’s new owners with continued strong airport regulation, if a 50 per cent increase in charges without any discernable increase in capacity is permitted at a regulated airport what would happen if the price caps were to be removed?” said a statement from Easyjet.
The High Court’s decision to dismiss Easyjet’s claim was welcomed by the CAA, who are happy with the increase and can now move on with business. The decision should also stop further reviews of price control on other UK airports and finally draw a line under the whole matter, the CAA said in a statement.
