A new hotel will open in the Scottish capital this summer that is so fashionable the staff will wear outfits designed by Missoni of Italy.
What is said to be the world’s first-ever “fashion hotel” will be part of a new multi-million-pound development located at the corner of George IV Bridge and the Royal Mile, at the site of the former council offices.
The hotel is a joint effort between the Belgian hotel company Rezidor and Missoni, the well-known Italian fashion and homewares brand.
Uniforms for the 100-plus staff at the hotel will come from the Missoni range, with some wearing outfits costing hundreds of pounds.
The owners are hoping to make an impact from the outside as well, with two four-foot-tall hand-made mosaic vases standing either side of the entrance.
Neither the condition of the economy nor Edinburgh’s recent drop in hotel occupancy has discouraged Rezidor from opening the hotel. It is predicting that Missoni fans will come to Edinburgh from countries abroad – particularly Italy – to see and stay at the hotel designed by Missoni.
Gordon McKinnon, who is Rezidor’s executive vice-president of brands, has said that summer bookings are already progressing well, even though the 136-room property will not open for business until late May.
