Egypt tourist bureau in the UK pushes for relaunch of Sharm flights

Sharm el-Sheikh AirportThe head of the Egypt Tourist Authority in the UK claims the time is ripe for the resumption of flights to Sharm el-Sheikh Airport. Newspapers in London reported Amr El-Ezabi as saying if Russia was prepared to restore flight connections to Egypt then the UK should allow airlines to start flying to the Sinai holiday town again.

Russia recently announced flights to Egypt will resume in February with a thrice weekly Moscow to Cairo service. The flights will be operated by EgyptAir. El-Ezab commented that Russia had recognised the progress Egypt had made in improvements to security at airports and on flights.

The station chief carried on by saying if Russia was so confident this should entice the UK to put Sharm el-Sheikh back on the map for British holidaymakers. Egypt and Sharm el-Sheikh’s problems began on 31 October 2015 when Islamic State terrorists detonated a bomb aboard a Russian aircraft just after takeoff from Sharm el-Sheikh Airport.

Metrojet Flight 9268 exploded over the north part of the Sinai Desert and all 224 on board were killed. Russia pulled the plug on all direct flights to Egypt. A number of European nations, including the UK, suspended flights to Sharm el-Sheikh in the wake of the bombing too.

Authorities in Egypt say they have spent the equivalent of £20 million on upgrading aviation security. While the rest of Europe has restored flights, the UK so far has not. The lack of flights to Sharm el-Sheikh has made a big dent in the number of Britons visiting Egypt. In 2014, the number was 750,000 but in 2016 it fell to 170,000.
