Electric shuttle cars for Heathrow Airport
Posted on: August 13th, 2009 by Taylor SmithAn electric car system is being trialled at the UK’s busiest airport to ferry passengers to and from the business car park. Up to four travellers and luggage will enter a bubble type vehicle which will then transport them to Terminal 5 aided by a computer guidance system, in style, and in comfort.
The £25 million project is an attempt at making transportation at the airport greener. The cars are capable of doing 25mph and will do away with waiting for diesel eating buses said the manufacturer Advanced Transportation Systems Ltd. The new transportation links will be complimentary to users of the business car parks.
The Personal Rapid Transport (PRT) system will have 21 cars working 24hours per day seven days a week along the two an a half mile route to and from the terminal. The company is planning on rolling this kind of system out to cities all over the country.
“We believe that our PRT system can transform cities in the 21st century to provide the optimum form of environmentally friendly urban transport, relieving congestion and reducing emissions,” said Professor Martin Lowson who is the inventor of the ground breaking vehicles.
The journey will take three to four minutes and passengers using the service will simply press a button and that will take them to their destination.
