Emirates Airline has taken the lead once again in aviation innovation becoming the first carrier in the world to offer in-flight mobile phone service.
The Dubai-based airline has recently updated part of its fleet with the technology necessary to allow passengers to use their mobile phones for calls and SMS text messaging while en route to their destination, on Boeing 777-300s.
The carrier’s vice president for passenger communications and visual services, Patrick Brannelly, commented that the in-flight mobile phone technology is an important upgrade in service to Emirates’ passengers.
Brannelly added: “Travellers booked on the Boeing 777, which carries the inflight mobile phone services, will now be able to continue communicating with family, friends or business associates on the ground while travelling in the skies.” He continued by saying: “The technology is another example of our dedication to always being the first airline to offer passengers groundbreaking technology and services.”
The Boeing 777-300s in the fleet equipped with the new technology operate on several of the carrier’s routes, including flights to Australia and Europe.
The technology, developed by in-flight mobile company AeroMobile, was first installed by Emirates on one of its Airbus A340-300 jets in March of this year, enabling the first authorized mobile phone calls on a commercial flight ever.
Since March, the airline has installed the in-flight mobile phone technology on 10 more planes including A330-200s, A340-300s, A340-500s and Boeing 777s. The carrier plans to introduce the system on other aircraft as well.
