Emirates has announced that it is reducing capacity on its Dubai-New York route due to decreased travel demand, and will replace its A380 super-jumbo currently servicing the route with a smaller plane. The airline noted that the change does not constitute a reduction in service to the US.
In the new schedule for the A380, service to Bangkok and Toronto will be featured, according to a report in the Gulf News.
In early June, the super-jumbo will makes its Canadian debut, while the addition of the service to Thailand will expand the A380’s Asian presence following the successful launch of the super-jumbo in Sydney and Auckland last month, Emirates reported.
“As the global economy has affected international air travel, this aircraft redeployment was based solely on a change in capacity demands in these three markets,” an airline spokesperson said.
On the New York route, the A380 will be replaced by a B777-300ER, which decreases capacity by 132 seats.
“When economic conditions improve, we anticipate demand will be restored on the Dubai-New York JFK service, at which time Emirates will certainly evaluate redeploying the A380 on this route,” the spokesperson for Emirates added.
Emirates is Airbus’s largest customer for the A380 super-jumbo, and has recently reaffirmed that it has confidence in the aircraft in spite of some reliability concerns.
