Big news has just hit the car rental industry. Enterprise Holdings has promoted a new person to the position of Chief Executive Officer. The company, which is the largest in the U.S. car rental market, said that it is going to promote Pamela Nicholson, 53, to chief executive officer. She is going to take over the spot from Andrew Taylor, 65, who will now have the title of Executive Chairman.
Nicholson first became a member of the Enterprise Holdings family nearly 32 years ago. She has made history by becoming the first non-member of the respected Taylor family to take the head of Enterprise. This is a big deal because Enterprise is a private company.
Jack Taylor, the father of Andy Taylor, first founded Enterprise Holdings in 1957. Since then, Jack and Andy Taylor have made the company a huge success in the rental car industry. They did this by not just opening up rental locations all over the world but also putting rental locations in airports.
Of course, this promotion means that Nicholson is going to have to be on her best game. Enterprise Holdings is a huge company that is always striving for success. Last year, it was able to bring in close to $15.4 billion in revenues. Nicholson will have to prove herself by keeping Enterprise’s numbers looking strong after she takes over.
Although Nicholson is not the first women to head a giant company like Enterprise, she is one of a very small few. In fact, reports suggest that the number of women who head huge company’s like Enterprise is only at 20. Not only that, the number of female CEOs for large private companies is also extremely small. Needless to say, Nicholson is now joining an extremely small percentage of women.
Despite this big change, Andrew Taylor has made it extremely clear that he wants the company to remain private. Andy also said that he wants the company to remain a family company. Currently, the only Taylors under Andy are women. One of this daughters, Christine Taylor-Broughton, recently assumed the head of North American Operations role.
Right now Enterprise Holdings has close to 74,000 employees. Not only that, Enterprise is well-known for hiring people right out of college. Last year, it reported that it hired nearly 8,000 graduates. This is a tradition that Andrew wants the company to continue with.
Nicholson has been climbing up the Enterprise ladder for many years now. In fact, back in 2008 she became the President of Enterprise. She has helped the company take the necessary steps to help expand its off-airport presence in the market. This is an area that she feels the company could really improve in.
When Nicholson became president, the company only had about an 8 percent share of the off-airport market. Now the company enjoys a 27 percent share of the same market. It is safe to assume that Nicholson knows this industry inside and out. Also, Enterprise Holdings now very heavily promotes its National Car Rental brand as a business brand.
