Enterprise Holdings Wins Gold

Enterprise Holdings & Car Rental Brand LogosEnterprise Holdings has announced that it’s been honoured with the Project ICARUS Sustainability Gold Medal from the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA). The Project ICARUS Sustainability Gold Medal recognises organisations in the travel industry that are actively incorporating sustainability into how they manage their operations. The programme is a leading source of support, information and education about the sustainability issues that affect the industry for corporate and meetings travel.

The group – which owns and operates the Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car brands – was recognised for its commitment to addressing three key sustainability elements – economic, social and environmental – throughout its operations. Its leadership and collaboration in the industry as it works to promote sustainable practices to customers, business partners and suppliers was commended as well.

Through its regional subsidiaries, Enterprise Holdings operates the biggest car hire and car sharing network in the world – including over 7,700 neighbourhood and airport locations. Of these, 6,000 branches in the US are located within 15 miles of 90% of the population. The group has become a strong leader in the car hire and travel industries with its corporate sustainability efforts.

One of these efforts is the 20/20 Vision Program, which was created to reduce energy use and the costs related by 20% by 2015 to save about $50 million. Another is its 50 Million Tree Pledge, for which it intends to plant 50 million trees over 50 years for $50 million in collaboration with the US Forest Service and Arbor Day Foundation.

Enterprise Holdings has also donated $35 million to the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and Enterprise Rent-A-Car Institute for Renewable Fuels in support of research and development of sustainable methods for creating biofuels for the next generation. At the same time, its electric vehicles make up the biggest electric car roll-out in the country, while it’s the first car hire provider in the US to offer the extended-range electric Chevrolet Volt.

The group is a member of the Electrification Coalition as well, which represents the whole value chain of the growing EV industry. Additionally, it’s a corporate member of the US Department of Energy’s ‘Clean Cities’ National Clean Fleets Partnership, while it recently announced the conversion of its airport shuttle bus fleet to biodiesel in over 50 markets across North America.

Furthermore, last year, Enterprise Holdings created Enterprise Sustainable Construction Protocol (ESCP) guidelines for new buildings and retrofitting existing Enterprise Rent-A-Car locations. Over $150 million is to be invested in sustainable construction during the next fives years. It’s first Corporate Sustainability Report was also published last year, highlighting several goals to 2015. This includes reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, continuing its 50 Million Tree Pledge and cutting energy consumption and related costs.

Enterprise Holdings head of corporate sustainability Lee Broughton says that they take a wide view of what running a sustainable business means – from their fleet and operations, to their support for advancing new automotive technology, conservation and research into renewable fuels. The investment they are making to support the company’s and industry’s future is further affirmed by this recognition from the GBTA Project ICARUS team.

Broughton added that the group is the biggest buyer of passenger vehicles in the world, putting them in a unique position to bring sustainable mobility options to their retail, business and airport customers. They are able to efficiently and quickly introduce millions of motorists to new vehicle technologies through their one-of-a-kind local car hire and car sharing network.
