Enterprise removes 83 per cent of affected Toyota rental cars
Posted on: February 8th, 2010 by Peter HeadleyThe car rental giant, Enterprise, has announced late last week that they have managed to remove 83 per cent of the Toyota vehicles from their fleet that are being recalled by Toyota. The Japanese car manufacturer is recalling more than five million vehicles across the US after a problem has been found with the acceleration sticking. More than 200 complaints have been received in the last six months and police reports have linked a number of car accidents to Toyotas uncontrollable speed.
Toyota have been widely criticised for being slow in the recall of the cars that also include the Pontiac Vibe, which is largely based on a Toyota model. A number of issues have been raised involving stuck pedals and even the car mats being not well designed and causing sticking problems in some cases. It is a great blow to the firm who has lost a great deal of business to the hire car trade as they are now looking at other models to replace the recalled cars. Other Far East manufacturers like Kia and Honda are looking to capitalise on the recall.
Enterprise have said that the recall of the cars within their branches has gone relatively smoothly as they do not make a big percentage of their fleet. They note however that some of their customers prefer the small engine Japanese cars and are looking to replace them with similar vehicles very soon. For the time being the rental firm will keep some of their older cars on fleet until replacements can be sourced.
