St. Louis-based Enterprise sees itself as a leader when it comes to offsetting carbon emissions, a relatively new way that major car hire firms are trying to compensate for the negative effects that this industry has on the environment. Enterprise observed that at the core of its offset program is both simplicity, as well as sustainability. Since Enterprise, Alamo and National all share a common owner, clients who book a car through any of these three brands will be given the option of paying a little extra on top of the rental fee and any taxes or surcharges. This money will then be matched by the firm and the total will be passed on to help fund a cause or project related to improving the environment or addressing the issue of climate change and global warming. The optional carbon off-set fee is set at $1.25 per rental and can be paid at the time of reservation.
Enterprise is working hand in hand with TerraPass, in order to make its carbon offset scheme especially successful. The money collected is currently being used to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. According to the most recent statistics, TerraPass is able to remove an impressive 30 million pounds of CO2 after every 100,000 renters that decide to take part in the program. Although Enterprise only officially launched its carbon off-set scheme earlier today, the firm had a pilot project going for the past several months and according to the company’s own numbers, nearly 1,000 renters decided to take part in the carbon offset scheme every single day.
