Enterprise works to create more environmentally friendly business
Posted on: May 13th, 2008 by Robert BergersonEnterprise Rent-A-Car continues to build its business in a way that has the least negative impact on the environment, and intends to remain an industry leader when it comes to “green” initiatives. As Enterprise prepares to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, the firm’s founders, the Taylor family of St. Louis, found themselves trying to think of ways to commemorate the car hire firm’s past, but also using this as an opportunity to show how important it is for the entire rental industry to keep environmental concerns in mind. This golden anniversary will also include a celebration of the Enterprise’s impressive fleet, which now counts one million rental vehicles.
Pat Farrell, Enterprise’s vice-president in charge of corporate responsibility, told journalists that part of the preparations for the golden anniversary included discussions on how the company could participate in, or even initiate an environmental sustainability project. The firm’s founder specifically expressed interest in cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions and coming up with a plan to achieve this goal. Farrell noted that “taking care of the environment” was not only the morally responsible thing to do, but it was also a “business imperative” for Enterprise in order to ensure that the firm remains successful in the future.
Enterprise already has a rather impressive history of green initiatives. For example, the firm initiated a tree planting campaign in 2006, which gained national recognition when US First Lady Laura Bush visited the site in person. Farrell also noted that the firm’s carbon off-set program was its most successful green initiative, and that this served as a way for Enterprise to express its gratitude to the community for the trust that it has received over the course of its fifty years in business.
