European Union believes Brussels Airlines site misleading
Posted on: July 3rd, 2008 by Andy SimpsonOfficials from the European Union and Denmark have determined that the Brussels Airlines website, along with those of several other major airlines, are misleading and do not give the customer a clear picture of what he/she will be required to pay for a ticket. In addition to Brussels Airlines, Ryanair, Air Berlin and SkyEurope were also seen as having misleading websites. Meglena Kuneva, the EU’s commissioner in charge of consumer affairs, noted that passengers are being “let down” by many of Europe’s largest airlines and that there are “serious and persistent problems with ticket sales throughout the airline industry as a whole.” Kuneva labeled the current situation as “unacceptable” and the publication of a list of carriers with misleading websites is seen as the first step in rectifying this situation.
EU and Danish authorities were frustrated to find that several of the Europe’s most prominent airlines operated websites which had confusing and unclear reservation procedures and rules, and also did not provide clear pricing information. A total of 13 travel-related firms were investigated by Danish officials and 7 of these firms still appear to be ignoring national and EU-wide regulations aimed at protecting the consumer.
According to Kuneva’s statistics, fully one-third of residents of EU member states who book their travel on websites operated within the union end up being mislead; most of the time this disinformation has to do with pricing. Additionally, unclear contracts and terms of service may also mislead passengers,
