Eurostar plan to resume services today
Posted on: December 22nd, 2009 by Robert BergersonThe Channel Tunnel train service by Eurostar is due to be back in action today after three days with no service. The cancellation of the trains happened after several trains became stuck in the tunnel late last week. Services from Paris to London were held up by up to eight hours as engineers fought to find out the problem.
The three day backlog of passengers is going to cause a headache on a large scale as they try to sort out the mess. Eurostar has asked that all passengers who are not travelling for essential issues to stay away. They will be concentrating on those passengers that had tickets booked over the weekend first.
The break down of the trains in the tunnel is being blamed on condensation that made its way into electrical components on the trains. The north of France had experienced severely cold weather late last week and trains had accumulated ice. When they had then entered the warmer tunnels this is thought to have melted and caused the problems.
So far around 40,000 people had been affected by the shutdown that lasted three days and experts are predicting that the backlog will not be cleared by Christmas day even if there are no more problems. Transport ministers in both France and the UK have already started a full investigation into the disruption and are asking that all results of the findings be passed to them rather than direct to Eurostar. Hopefully there will be no repeat of this over the New Year break as people hope to get away for holidays.
