Expedia teams up with Air Berlin
Posted on: April 21st, 2008 by Hannah WestfieldExpedia has partnered with Air Berlin, Germany’s second largest carrier and one of the most prominent discount airlines in all of Europe. The newly signed agreement means that both leisurely and business travelers will now get to book some of the cheapest Air Berlin tickets directly through Expedia’s website. The agreement between the airline and the international booking site is quite extensive, as it will allow for passengers to reserve tickets on any flight operated by Air Berlin, for some of the lowest rates. As such, comparing Air Berlin’s prices with those of rival airlines will become a much easier task, thanks to this multi-year deal.
Thorsten Scherzer, Air Berlin’s vice president, noted that Expedia was an “ideal partner” for the German discount airline, since it will ensure that the firm is able to enhance its position in the international air travel market. Scherzer observed that millions of travelers now choose to book directly through Expedia, rather than contacting individual airlines, due to the fact that the online travel company does such a thorough job of comparing fares.
Air Berlin will also benefit from this new accord with Expedia in other ways. For example, Expedia has confirmed that it will provide the German airline with “online travel distribution expertise,” as well as various forms of marketing support.
Although Air Berlin is a discount carrier, it differs markedly from nearly all other low-cost airlines, such as easyJet, Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Wizz Air and SkyEurope. Unlike these carriers, Air Berlin serves passengers complimentary light meals (usually a sandwich) on all flights, as well as non-alcoholic drinks.
