Family billed for rental car charges of dead sons
Posted on: January 14th, 2009 by Peter HeadleyA rental car operator in New Zealand is planning to charge the family of two Melbourne brothers, killed recently at Fox Glacier, for the cost of towing their rental car.
Ashish and Akshay Miranda, brothers who were born in India, were killed last week when 100 tonnes of ice and rocks fell on them at Fox Glacier.
The keys to their rental car were buried with the victims, meaning that the car had to be towed back to the rental agency, at a cost of approximately NZ$600.
Edwin Chan, the owner of New Zealand Car Rental Specialists, who rented the car to the men, said the locksmith who cut a new key for the vehicle will not charge the family for his services.
The rental car company owner noted that a number of fees have been waived, but that the outstanding $600 is owed to an independent tow truck driver.
According to Chan, he has discussed the matter with the driver, but added that everyone is having a difficult time financially right now.
“I want to do my best to help. It’s not that I don’t want to. It’s just there’s a bill to pay,” Chan said. “I can’t turn around and tell the towie, forget about it, I’m not going to pay you anything”.
