It would not be some people’s first choice of accommodation when heading to San Francisco but very soon tourists could be given the chance to spend a night at the world famous Alcatraz.
Currently hundreds of tourists take the trip daily across San Francisco Bay on a ferry to The Rock, to hear tales of days gone by when Al Capone was a resident or of the 36 inmates who attempted to escape. However now under a new scheme the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) who take care of the prison are thinking of offering the chance for visitors to spend a night in the lock up.
It is suggested that accommodation would be primarily for people working on project that have interest in the prison or for people carrying out work on the restorations of the prison.
Building 64 is the proposed site to house guests in and was once used as a post office and a guard’s apartment. “’It would be a dorm and people would be able to stay overnight to better accomplish their projects,” said John Aviles for GGNRA.
“It didn’t seem scary, it’s well kept and if it’s good enough for the birds then it would be good enough for me,” said Paul Lipman, a visitor to the site on hearing the news.
