Two years ago ten-year old Gurrinderjit Singh was abandoned by his parents at a bus stop in London’s Southall. Although the whereabouts of his parents are still unknown, it is believed he was abandoned by Indian parents who had illegally immigrated to the UK.

After two years of legal turmoil, the boy is finally being allowed to return home to his native Punjab. The London Borough of Ealing had to petition the Haryana high court on the boy’s behalf in order for his return home to be orchestrated.

Wednesday, Gurrinderjit finally received permission from the ministry of external affairs to travel on the basis of an emergency. Gurrinderjit’s lawyer Anil Malhotra told the BBC that trying to get the twelve-year-old the right to travel back to his family had been a huge challenge.

The two year long legal battle began when Gurrinderjit was found homeless wandering along a road in Southall in west London. The boy was placed into the foster care system in the UK, but was not allowed travel documents and as such could not travel back home.

The child’s parents are reportedly in either Italy or the UK, but there whereabouts are not officially known and neither has come forward to claim the boy. However, the high court agreed that denying the twelve-year old a passport would violate Indian constitution and thus the boy was granted travel documents after two years of legal battle.

The London Borough of Ealing will now be held responsible for escorting the child to India where he will be handed over to his closest paternal or maternal relative. A British social worker will escort the boy home on April 12, the same day as his birthday.

A travel agent formerly employed at Travel Counsellors recently developed an innovative new technology which will make traveling with small children less of a hassle especially when car hire is involved. Grainne Kelly’s new portable child seat is ideal for families who are planning on taking a trip or who travel a lot out of necessity.

This mom of two from Northern Ireland was travelling back and forth to England fairly often and saw the need arise more than once for a handy, portable booster seat. She said that every time she booked a car rental, she would find that upon arrival the hire company had no child seats available, despite having reserved them ahead of time.

So, with that in mind, Mrs. Kelly took it upon herself to develop an easy-to-inflate portable child booster for moms and dads on-the-go. The inventions inception occurred when Kelly searched the market for portable car seats after several clients had had similar issues with car hire bookings, and she was surprised to find nothing available in terms of travel child seats.

Last year, Kelly went to China to look into making a prototype of her inflatable booster seat and was able to receive her first shipment of the product in December. Since then, after securing approval from the EU, Kelly has been using the internet to sell her child seats.

Kelly is also poised to sign several distribution deals with major retailers across the UK. In fact, travel companies have even shown interest in carrying her product. Angela Day, managing director at Affordable Car Hire, stated that she had considered offering a similar type of booster on her website as an alternative means for parents traveling with small kids.

The ongoing talks between the Unite union and British Airways will continue today according to the airline’s Chief Executive Willie Walsh, who made the statement after no agreement was reached during a late night session on Thursday.

Walsh departed TUC headquarters refusing to comment of the success or lack of at the talks, which had seen him in discussions with joint general secretary for Unite, Tony Woodley, for much of the day.

There is so far no word on whether the pair have been able to make any progress in averting strike action by airline cabin crew, with the first three-day walk-off scheduled to take place tomorrow while a second is set for next Saturday, the 27th of March.

Yesterday’s talks came as a surprise to most observers, with Mr Woodley telling the BBC that both sides were in the same room and involved in discussions, adding that it was too early to know if a suitable resolution could be found.

A spokesperson for British Airways declined to comment on the meetings, saying the company would not descend to making a running commentary on the negotiations.

Unite is pursuing a settlement which would include yearly pay rises for staff members and working hour commitments as an exchange for taking the brunt of the £62.5m cost cutting exercises by the airline.

Around 35 percent of all passengers will be stranded if the strike moves ahead, with the cancellation of up to 1,100 flights.

The Federal Aviation Industry (FAA) has announced that for the second time in under a week it will be handing down a fine to American Airlines over violations of aircraft maintenance.

The $300,000 proposed civil penalty was due to lapses in aircraft maintenance that may have endangered passengers, crew and the aircraft. The FAA said that it had written to American Airlines late last week to advise them of the infringement notice. According to the FAA, American Airlines maintenance workers did not properly disclose or document a speed indicator during a check in February of a MD-82 jet.

The airline continued to fly with the defective indicator, with crew members unaware of the potentially tragic fault, including rough winter weather and night flights among the five additional journeys flown. Flying with the malfunctioning indicator in anything less than clear daytime weather is in breach of FAA procedures approved by the airline.

Earlier this month, on the 12th of March, the FAA had suggested that American Airlines could be facing fines of up to $787,500. On both occasions the carrier has said that it will be reviewing its operating procedures before meeting with the industry regulator. American Airlines is the sole US-based airline that conducts its own in-house heavy maintenance program in conjunction with the FAA.

In addition to faulty indicators, American Airlines is also facing disciplinary action over malfunctioning pilot tubes or external speed sensors.

A new development in China could see passengers in London travelling by rail to Beijing or Singapore in just three days. The proposal, which China is hoping to get underway this year, could see a high-speed rail link set up between the UK, Europe, China, and other areas in Asia.

Passengers would board in London and make their way to Singapore or Beijing in less than a week. Wang Mengshu, who is a senior consultant for domestic railways in China, as well as a Chinese Academy of Engineering member, announced that they would aim for the trains to operate almost as quickly as aircraft in terms of speed.

The rail system would involve three networks. One would depart from London and make the two day journey to Beijing via the Channel Tunnel. That line would also continue onto Singapore. The second rail link would be similar but include Burma, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.

The third and final rail link would connect China to Germany, Russia, and other European railway links. Wang said the Chinese government was optimistic that all three lines could be complete in under ten years. He said that negotiations among 17 nations have already commenced.

If successful the rail project would be the biggest international infrastructure project ever. The rail networks could also carry trade materials and goods in addition to passengers. Some of the Asian network as already been started on with lines beginning in Burma in the southern Yunnan province.

<p Turkey has topped the list for most gastroenteritis claims for the year 2009. UK holiday makers should plan on keeping their travel insurance policies close at hand if hoping to take a holiday trip to Turkey in the near future.

Insurewithease.com conducted research on such related illness, and found that Turkey had, by far, the most reported incidents of stomach illnesses. Despite its romantic Ottoman architecture and pristine landscapes the country still lacks some basic health standards which could be the cause of such a bountiful number of tummy issues for travellers.

Turkey, however, was followed by Egypt, Spain, the Dominican Republic, and then the US. All of which had a predominately greater risk of travellers contracting stomach illnesses than other countries in the research. The top ten nations for high risk gastroenteritis claims were rounded out by Bolivia, Cyprus, Ukraine, Israel, and then Equatorial Guinea.

Sarah Taylor, an online marketing manager for insurewithease.com, said that a sudden illness, especially a stomach virus, can easily ruin a holiday. She encouraged travellers to use means to minimize this risk as often as possible. Steps travellers can take include avoiding untreated water such as ice cubes and sticking to bottled water when ordering at restaurants.

Ms. Taylor did add, however, that these precautions do not always guarantee that stomach illnesses will be avoided and as such advised travellers to take out holiday insurance prior to embarking on any trips. Illness and accidents are a fact of life and by taking out a travel insurance policy prior to leaving the UK, travellers can avoid steep health care costs while abroad.

Alcosense, a safety organisation focused on debunking urban myths surrounding drinking and driving, is urging drivers to consider the risks of getting behind the wheel while drunk. Literature surrounding the facts on drinking and driving has led Alcosense to believe that many urban myths cause drivers to not take drinking and driving seriously.

Fleet solutions managers should be advised to invest the money and time into preparing their drivers for the consequences of drinking and driving, and educating them on the dangers of this particular conduct. The safety organisation that is Aclosense believes these urban legends can cause some drivers to have a blase attitude towards driving under the influence.

The safety awareness group cites such myths as drinking coffee to sober up and promote alertness and the misnomer that larger individuals can remain sober under the influence of higher contents of alcohol. The safety group admits that people hear these rumors and use them to excuse their own driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Commercial vehicle drivers as well as car leasing drivers must remember that other such myths as drinking copious amounts of water or using strong breath fresheners will be equally as ineffective as helping the mind regain a sober state of consciousness.

Fleet solutions bosses, says Alcosense, need to center training around debunking these myths and inform their employees and drivers of the legal limits within the UK for drinking and driving. At present individuals with BAC levels of more than 80 milligrams for every 100 milliliters of blood are considered legally intoxicated in the UK.

The planned strike action by Unite, the union which represents British Airways, scheduled to take place this Saturday has received support from a number of overseas unions.

In the United States, union officials have stated that they were investigating legal options for ways in which to back the striking British Airways cabin crew workers, while at the same time exploring wider international cooperation across the troubled air travel industry. The International Transport Worker’s Federation civil aviation secretary, Gabriel Mocho, claimed that a groundswell of industry support has been rising for cabin crew staff, believed to be being bullied into new workplace agreements.

Mocho added that showing such support was difficult but that if the dispute remains unresolved then the likelihood of international lawful demonstrations would increase. Mocho said that aviation workers across the globe are watching on eagerly and stand ready to help their embattled colleagues.

U.S. International Brotherhood of Teamsters Airline Division Director Captain David Bourne also claimed that his organisation was exploring legal avenues to show support for the striking workers. Unite officials met with Capt Bourne in Washington DC this week to discuss the dispute and possible international collaboration. He advised that similar action in the US would require a drawn-out mediation process but that the Teamsters were contacting other union representatives to garner support for their British Airways colleagues.

Two cabin crew members from Emirates Airlines have been sentenced to jail in Dubai for exchanging text messages of a sexual nature. The three-month prison sentences were handed down under a verdict of coercion to commit sin.

The 42-year-old female flight attendant and her 47-year-old male supervisor, both of Indian origin, had earlier been given a prison sentence of six months which was to be followed by enforced deportation. This was reduced on appeal by the court that halved the prison time and dropped expulsion orders. The court’s revised conviction was due to lack of substantial evidence to confirm the two had been involved sexually on a deeper level than the messaging.

The text messages were produced by Etisalat, the Dubai telecommunications organisation, at a divorce court in a separate hearing relating to the woman’s acrimonious break-up with her former husband, who had accused his wife of adultery. Copies of the SMS exchanges dating back to October 2008 were provided by Etisalat to the court to support the charges of a criminal complaint filed by the jilted husband. The woman’s sister was also sentenced to a three-month jail sentence for perjury after she told authorities that it was her that was having the affair and that she had sent the messages from her sister’s phone.

Elsewhere in Dubai, a final verdict is still to be delivered on the British couple who are facing a one-month prison sentence for public kissing.
