In a recent survey, more than half of those polled said they believe holidays remain important even during tough economic times, and that they’d rather cut back on other spending than on their breaks.
The survey was conducted to the holiday add-ons company Holiday Extras, and found that nearly 52 per cent of the respondents had not downscaled their holiday plans – or postponed their travels – due to the credit crunch.
Conducted last month, of the 305 customers participating, around 25 per cent noted that they had made some minor changes to their holiday plans.
The figure reporting major changes to holiday plans was much smaller – only 10 per cent.
Mike Whiting, who is the managing editor at Holiday Extras, commented: “These results highlight just how important holidays are to the British people. Travel may be a luxury but it seems most people would rather spend a little less on day to day items rather than sacrifice their well-earned breaks.”
The finance expert for Holiday Extras’ online experts panel, Richard Cohen, said: “Although the current economic climate means that people are watching their spending it also means that there are some better deals available from holiday companies, airlines and hotels – all of whom need to keep making money in these hard times.”
Cohen added: “The trick is to shop around for bargains, use sales to your advantage and be on the lookout for any nasty hidden costs.”
