The first £1,000 rail ticket has hit the ticket office in the UK sparking outrage and condemnation. Opposition MPs have described the ticket as being of very poor value to the British public and being a scandal in the making. The fare is of course a first-class piece of paper and it is also a return ticket. It will only cost this much if the customer buys the tickets on the day of travel and an advanced fare would cost almost half that at £561. The train leaves Newquay in Cornwall and travel to Kyle of Lochalsh in the Scottish Highlands.

The shocking price for the ticket was found by a rail expert who was researching prices on train tickets in the UK. Barry Doe said that the price of travel over long distances have risen by more than three times the amount of inflation, ever since the rail service was privatised in the mid 1990s. In his research Mr Doe discovered that the price of the same ticket back in 2008 could be had for as little as £486 for the 1,700 mile roundtrip.

The journey covers three separate rail firms and Barry noted that the first and last sections of the journey do not even have first-class carriages for the ticket holder so it cannot really be regarded as first-class travel all the way. Standard rail fares are set to drop in January, but critics claim that rail firms will just increase the cost on the un-regulated routes to try and make up for the loss and the infamous £1,000 price could soon become eclipsed.
