A flight attendant, who created an in-flight emergency at 30,000 feet, has been sentenced to jail.
Twenty-four-year-old Australian Matthew Carney pleaded guilty to the charge of “inducing a false belief that an object liable to explode” on Emirates flight EK-011 on route from Dubai to London in March of this year.
Carney told the court that he had suffered a mental breakdown after having worked back-to-back shifts and said he could not explain why he wrote a note that claimed the Taliban placed a bomb in the plane’s cargo hold.
His lawyer, Andel Singh, noted that Carney was “extremely tired” and had been under a great deal of stress.
Singh told the court: “He apologizes wholeheartedly and sincerely to all those individuals who were even the slightest bit inconvenienced.”
It was reported that the hoax cost Emirates over $84,000 in making arrangements for the 164 passengers on board. They were detained for a day while counter-terrorism officers searched the aircraft and interviewed everyone on board.
The court also heard that some passengers were now too afraid to fly.
In a hearing that was held earlier, the court heard that the flight had operated without incident until the flight attendant claimed he found loose wires hanging in a toilet on board.
