Key West tourism leaders met recently to approve a contingency plan to be put in place the day that travel restrictions to Cuba are lifted by Washington. They also approved some slogans to go along with the plan.
”We’re Making History Again” is one of the slogans they will use to promote tours of historic homes found in both Key West and Havana.
“So Much to Catch Up On” is a slogan they considered for a possible fishing tournament held off both of the islands. Another that would support visits to both of the popular destinations is: “Two Nations. One Vacation”.
Monroe County Florida has prepared a new, 10-page “Cuba Strategic Marketing Plan” that reflects the increased attention focused on Cuba by the tourism industry in Florida.
Last month, travel restrictions to Cuba for Cuban-Americans were lifted by the White House, and many are wondering what will come next – possibly allowing all Americans to visit Communist Cuba.
The possibility of Cuba visits being opened to all Americans has been a concern for years for Florida tourism leaders, fearing competition from the exotic island. Studies have predicted that up to two million Americans would choose Cuba as a destination in the years following the end of restrictions on travel.
This potential has Florida officials looking at ways to prepare for the new boom in tourism that is likely to happen just 90 miles away – and to capitalize on it.
