Budget airline with extras Flybe has announced and launched its new route between Gatwick Airport and the highest airport in England, Leeds Bradford Airport.
Mathew Bose who played Paul Lamberts in the TV programme Emmerdale was there to open the first flight for Flybe and handed the first person who booked the flight and the first person to check-in a souvenir Magnum of Champagne. The first passenger was Margaret Smith who was connecting in Gatwick to travel onward to Jersey.
“Our ticket sales have exceeded initial forecasts and I’m delighted to report strong demand on this key route that is of great strategic importance,” said Mike Rutter, chief commercial officer for Flybe.
BMI recent had a similar service running between Leeds Bradford and Heathrow but stopped earlier this year in March because of poor ticket sales. Flybe then stepped in with their idea of the route which would take passengers to the south of London.
Flybe now has 17 destinations in the UK alone and flies to 140 foreign destinations. Leeds Bradford Airport had almost three million travellers use its terminal last year and is set to grow more this year with the introduction of the new flight.
