Foreign Office issues travel warnings for Brits heading to France

The UK Foreign Office has warned Britons heading to France during the half-term school breaks that travel plans could face disruption as a result of the ongoing industrial action in the country.

The advice extends to all forms of transport in France as rail workers and other public sector transport workers continue to strike against proposed pension reforms. The Foreign Office states on its website that travel disruption around the country is unpredictable and substantial as a result of the ‘wildcat strikes’.

The website also warns UK holidaymakers to check local news reports and remain in contact with tour operators prior to travelling. Those planning to take their own vehicles were also warned of the ongoing fuel shortages within the country.

Britain’s RAC motoring group said that calls from members looking for travelling advice in France have jumped by 10 per cent. However, it did add that there was no increase in the number of motorists facing difficulties once in the country.

Both the Foreign Office and the motoring organisation urged drivers to make sure they had enough fuel to finish their journey, saying that motorists should fill-up at the pump as often as possible. However, P&O Ferries has issued a statement reminding drivers that brining extra petrol onboard in jerricans or containers is prohibited.

Many car hire firms have suggested that customers purchase fuel up front to avoid the hassle of refilling their vehicle. Avis warned its hirers to be vigilant in watching fuel tanks to avoid getting caught short.

The Foreign Office also advised all Britons to avoid demonstrations while in the country.
