Student Tommy Frankenburg has given away his £1,000 holiday to a scientist who was attacked on his way home from a night out. He decided to do this after he and his girlfriend broke up, as he had booked the holiday for the two of them to enjoy together. He didn’t have anyone else to go with and didn’t really want to go with anyone else anyway.
Instead, he invited people to contact him in a video he posted on YouTube and give him a good reason why they deserved the week-long trip to Malta – which included a four-star accommodation, airline tickets and car rental. Over 112,000 people watched the video, and the deed was reported in other countries around the world.
After going through some 2,000 entries, Tommy (22) chose Stuart Flynn to send on his holiday. The assistant scientist for the Environment Agency was put in a coma last year after two people brutally attacked him in Hyson Green – less than five minutes from his home. The 39-year-old stayed in intensive care after the drunk and high on drugs attackers kicked him and stamped his head unprovoked. He even had to learn to eat, walk and talk again; and he’s still recovering from a brain injury.
The attackers – 19-year-old Michelle Roberts and 20-year-old Paul Creighton – were jailed last September after admitting grievous bodily harm with intent. Creighton was sentenced to jail indefinitely with a minimum of five years, and Roberts will serve eight-and-a-half years. In a follow-up video from Tommy on YouTube, Stuart is seen talking about seeing the attackers jailed. He wasn’t initially bothered about going to see them in court but felt very emotional on the day.
Dawn, his 39-year-old wife, talked about seeing her husband in intensive care and not knowing what the future will hold. They don’t want to spend their lives thinking about the attackers, who have been punished. The couple think Stuart was attacked due to the way he looked – as he likes punk and has dreadlocks. Their lives are focused on Stuart getting better. She also noted that she gave up her job as a teacher to become his carer, but is going to university in September for a PhD, studying young people’s attitudes towards different looking people.
Dawn added that they can’t wait to go on holiday. She says they’ve never been to Malta, and it looks beautiful. Some of the activities there could help Stuart with his rehab – like diving – but they just want to have fun.
Tommy says he chose Stuart and Dawn as he thought their story was incredible. What he loves the most is that they have such a positive attitude about life. He got a variety of responses from people who wanted to fix their marriages to people wanting one last holiday before they die. He even got a few propositions from people who like his look. He added that he was amazed at the attention his objective received and had a great time doing it. It wasn’t about him, as his holiday would have been wasted otherwise. Now he’s trying to raise money for four other people who he thinks should get a holiday.
Aside from the bookings included in the £1,000 holiday, some freebies have been added by some travel companies. This Is Malta has organised some special things for Stuart and Dawn. Hotel Corinthia has offered a lunch, massages and other beauty treatments; Fortina Hotel is providing a sea cruise with Captain Morgan Cruises and a bus tour with City Sightseeing Buses; Sun Fun Malta is offering a double jet ski experience; Palm Beach Lido has offered a lunch and boat trip; Tang is giving away a dinner for two; and Dive Malta is offering a free diving lesson.
