Free night in five star hotel for struggling artists
Posted on: August 11th, 2009 by Martin FellowesA top class hotel in Berlin has opened their doors to struggling artists and offered them a free room in exchange for some works of art.
They have invited artists to their five star establishment with the hope of changing the style of decor through paintings, sculptures or more of a permanent change by conceptual artists.
It has proved such a hit with the art community that there is now a waiting list for the free rooms. “As long as they come from outside Berlin and need a bed for the night, everyone is welcome, though we’ve got such a long waiting list that we are very careful about picking and choosing our guests,” said the curator of the Kunst-Werke Institute of Contemporary Art, Susanne Pfeffer who put together the project.
The first artist to get to grips on a free nights stay was Douglas Gordon, a Turner Prize winner from Glasgow. He designed and crafted the red neon sign that adorns the fa?ade at the front of the hotel.
There has been some unusual takes on art at the hotel. One guy boarded the windows of a room with the metal grates used to protect empty houses from squatters. Another lady placed a horses head above a lacquered black bed, but the next guest is due to take that down and decorate the room in more of a tribute to Paris’s Eiffel Tower.
