On Thursday, Freedom Direct Holidays ceased trading leaving thousands of customers worried about the holidays they had booked through the company.
The liquidators, Newcastle accountancy firm RMT, have stepped in and are reassuring the company’s customers that no one will lose money, but that those booked on tours operated by Freedom Direct will probably find their holidays cancelled. Those customers would need to apply for a refund.
The Newcastle-based company, with an annual turnover of £70 million, operated successfully for the last 12 years. It ceased trading when new auditors that it had appointed found they could not complete the company’s accounts on time.
Approximately 2,600 holiday bookings will be affected, but RMT is currently looking at options that include selling tours that were booked with Freedom Direct to other travel operators, meaning that customers would still be able to go on their holidays as planned.
RMT’s Mike Potts said: “It is a tragic situation. I have not come across this type of thing before. Freedom Direct had traded perfectly well, apart from a slight dip this year as experienced by all operators in the current climate.”
He went on to say: “There had been no problems with their accounting before, but this time they were deemed to be not good enough.”
