Gatwick Express service extended to Brighton

The service from Victoria Station London on the Gatwick Express has been extended to Brighton, increasing seats into London by more than 10 per cent during peak times.

The London to Brighton runs operate on weekdays only, with six services provided daily, scheduled during the morning and evening rush hours. After departing London, the express service stops at Haywards Heath, Wivelsfield, Burgess Hill, Hassocks and Preston Park before arriving in Brighton.

Southern Railways, the operator of the Gatwick Express service, has added new trains to its fleet on the line. The interiors of the new trains feature comfortable seating, dedicated spaces for wheelchairs, ample luggage space.

Some reconditioned trains will continue to operate on two of the six daily services, although three additional new trains will be phased in as they are available.

The changes on the service come after many years of planning by both the transport department and former Strategic Rail Authority, working together to solve the overcrowding problem on Sussex commuter services.

Chris Burchell, the managing director of Southern Railways, said to the BBC: “This timetable change is the most comprehensive we’ve had to make over the past seven years of this franchise. It will deliver more seats for our customers and where they are needed most – into and out of London in the busy peak periods.”
