Groupon and Expedia Team Up

Expedia and Groupon LogosLast week, it was announced that Groupon Inc, the global daily deals pioneer, has teamed up with Expedia to create Groupon Getaways with Expedia. This travel deals service is part of the coupon company’s drive to add more vertical lines of business and build out its platform of technology.

Groupon Getaways with Expedia is expected to launch in the US and Canada later this month. It is set to offer around 50% off the retail prices listed on other travel websites. Every offer will only be available for a limited period. Although the service hasn’t officially launched yet, consumers can sign up to start getting emails for offers.

Groupon chief executive Andrew Mason says that Groupon Getaways with Expedia is fitting to their local deals, which will help people get out and explore the globe. They are excited for the opportunity to use the vast network of world-class travel providers at Expedia so they can deliver unmatched exposure to them and offer a wonderful service to millions at the same time.

At the D9 conference last week, Mason said that this new service will allow consumers to book airfare and hotel rooms from Expedia with a steep discount. This follows a similar partnership that they launched in May for entertainment with Live Nation Entertainment. The new deal is a chance to combine their audience and brand with Expedia’s supply to offer great consumer experiences.

Mason also said that Groupon has continued its rapid growth rate, and the headcount is now over 8,000, following a count of just 1,500 last year. They are becoming more of a technology company than a sales and marketing company.

Expedia Worldwide president Scott Durchslag says that everyone wins with this new partnership. Travellers will get amazing deals for travel to dream locations, suppliers will have the ability to reach a huge audience with no upfront cost to be included, Groupon is extending its business into new markets, and Expedia is advancing its new ‘Expedia Everywhere’ strategy by delivering daily deals through a powerful new high growth channel.

A spokesman for Expedia says that Groupon is clearly a leader in daily deals and will bring expertise to the partnership. Expedia offers travel relationships with hoteliers and other suppliers, inventory and expertise. Deals will start with hotels, but travel bundles are planned to be offered, along with other components of a holiday, like airfare and car hire.

Meanwhile, Mason suggested that the start-up private company wouldn’t talk about financial issues. When being asked during an interview about why Groupon turned down a $6 billion bid from Google for a buyout, he only stared silently. However, he did say that the company isn’t facing declining margins, which is something the company’s business model has been criticised for. The margins are great, he noted, but he didn’t say what they were.
