UK Foreign Secretary William Hague has made an extremely frank public statement in an attempt to quash gay rumours after it was revealed that he sometimes shares a hotel room with his younger male aid. Mr Hague said he has never had a relationship with a man after his 25-year-old special advisor Christopher Myers quit his job amid the allegations which are circulating on the internet.
The former Conservative Party leader also said that his marriage to his wife Ffion is still strong, despite revealing that the couple has suffered the trauma of multiple miscarriages over the past few years.
Prime Minister David Cameron said he backs Mr Hague 100 percent, although other party members have been more critical. John Redwood, for example, said the Foreign Secretary exercised poor judgement when choosing to share a twin room with his assistant.
PR guru Max Clifford and Labour leadership candidate Ed Balls have also described Mr Hague’s decision to make a statement on the matter as “unwise”, suggesting it could also fuel media interest. Mr Hague, however, said both he and his wife felt the need to put the record straight and refute the circulating rumours.
A well known political blogger, who goes by the pseudonym Guido Fawkes, was the first to reveal that Hague and Myers shared a hotel room during the recent election campaign. Rumours about the pair’s relationship have been circulating since Myers’s appointment, as members of parliament and the press suggested that he was not qualified to do the job.
