Foreign Secretary William Hague made a frank statement on Wednesday denying that he ever had a relationship with a man. This came after Christopher Myers, his special adviser, resigned due to the damage caused by malicious and untrue allegations around the net.
Rumors about the closeness between Hague and Myers had been circulating the internet since photographs of them walking and laughing together were published. The photos also featured them wearing sunglasses and in casual dress.
Hague said that his former aide is someone that was tired of the political world, and questioned who could blame him for it. He also insisted that his work at the Foreign Office hasn’t missed a beat during this situation. He hasn’t spent any time away from his duties, he added.
Hague has been married to Ffion since 1997 and revealed that they have suffered the trauma of many miscarriages, including one over the summer. However, there marriage is strong, he added.
The Prime Minister was giving Hague all his support about the issue. However, others in the party criticized the issue more. John Redwood posted on his blog that the Foreign Secretary seems to understand the poor judgment made in sharing a room with his assistant.
Hague has also received criticism for the public response he made about the rumors. Some believe it was unwise and likely to cause more problems than anything else. However, the Foreign Secretary said that he and wife felt the need to set the record straight and couldn’t allow the allegations to circulate without refuting them.
