Heavy snows see ski resorts opening early

Recent heavy snow falling across both Europe and North America has made it possible for a number of ski resorts to open early this year.

Obergurgl, in Austria, Flims and Lenzerheide, in Switzerland and Hemsedal, in Norway are all planning early openings, according to a spokesperson for the Ski Club of Great Britain.

Some resorts have already been able to open in locations across Europe, including Italy’s Bormio and Geilo, in Norway.

Zermatt is reporting a snow depth 220cm on its upper slopes, and Saas Fee is reporting one and a half metres.

Tignes is also blanketed with snow, and is reporting 10cm on its lower slopes, according to the Ski Club spokesperson.

On the other side of the Atlantic, ski resorts in North America are also opening early, including California’s Mammoth and Snowbird, in Utah.

In Colorado, Arapahoe Basin and Breckenridge are open, as is Banff, in Canada, which is Canada’s first ski resort to open this season. Jasper in Alberta, has said that it will open this weekend.

Alyn Morgan, of the Ski Club of Great Britain, commented: “After some good periods of snow this month, including heavy snow over the past couple of days in Europe, the winter ski season really feels like it is upon us.

“It bodes well for good early season conditions and hopefully good snow cover for the festive period.”
