Car rental giant Hertz has announced that it is relaunching its Green Collection in countries throughout Europe, in which a range of fuel-efficient vehicles will be offered to its customers at 70 locations.

All of the green vehicles can be booked by make and model, and have a carbon dioxide output of 140g/km or lower, which is the European Union’s voluntary output target set for the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. The rental car company claims that over half of the models on offer have a carbon dioxide output of 120g/km or less.

Vehicles offered in the collection include the Ford Focus Diesel 1.6, the VW Passat, the Fiat Punto natural gas model (available only in Italy), the Opel Zafira CNG model and the Opel Combo CNG (both available only in the Netherlands) – and a fleet of electric scooters that can be rented in Amsterdam and locations in Spain. Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Switzerland and the UK will all have vehicles from the Green Collection available for rent, and the service will expand to the Czech Republic and Sweden later in June.

Hertz has said that it is also committed to fuel economy goals and to the reduction of fleet emissions, an effort that is being developed by the World Economic Forum.

Shareholders groups have praised Hertz for these initiatives and are exerting pressure on the Avis Budget Group to do the same.
