In Milan, The Hertz Corporation has launched the ElectriCity scheme to provide Nissan LEAFs for rent by the hour and day. The electric cars can be hired from the Hertz Milano Centrale rail station branch and can be reserved online. This follows Hertz’s success with electric car offerings in other major cities, like London, Paris, Rome, Washington DC and New York City.
The Nissan LEAF is a very popular all-electric car, featuring a 4-star Euro NCAP rating. It’s manufactured with a compact electric engine with 280 NM torque and 80kW power. This is all powered with a 4kWh lithium ion laminated battery that guarantees great range, performance and efficiency. The vehicle’s special brakes convert the kinetic energy of the car from braking or travelling downhill into electric energy. This helps the battery recharge, while a total recharge can get the vehicle up to 175km. Drivers can reduce electric energy consumption with the ECO option and increase the driving range for a total recharge.
The official launch of ElectriCity was hosted by IKEA, which has agreed to offer a special rental discount for member customers of its IKEA Family. The Nissan LEAFs also have free access to the ZTL congestion zone in Milan, as well as free pay and display parking in bays marked with blue stripes.
IKEA Group sustainability manager of retail Stefano Brown said the company wants to take the lead in a low carbon society by substantially cutting emissions and adopting new technology for renewable mobility and energy solutions. More than half of its buildings use renewable sources for their energy needs. By partnering with Hertz, they confirm their commitment to help encourage new types of mobility by making it available to their customers at a special rate.
Nissan Italy manager Bernard Loire says they are proud to be part of this innovative electric car project with Hertz and IKEA. They have always been dedicated to developing sustainable solutions which combine vehicles, nature and people. Nissan Italy corporate sales manager Alberto Sabatino added that Hertz and IKEA customers will be able to experience the innovative driving system of the Nissan LEAF with ElectriCity. Consumers will get to drive the vehicle between Milan and IKEA stores in the urban area thanks to its electrical range.
Hertz International president Michel Taride says that the company offers electric cars in more cities than any other car hire group. They are dedicated to offering mobility solutions that are eco-friendly to holidaymakers and business travellers. They believe that providing cars like the Nissan LEAF to city residents and visitors can help increase the use of this technology. Hertz Italy general manager Massimiliano Archiapatti added that their joint customers with the IKEA Family can hire the Nissan LEAF with a 20% discount. The vehicles can be used to shop at the Milan stores in Corsico, Giuliano and Carugate, as well as be recharged for free at the electric car charging stations provided by IKEA.
Hertz is forming partnerships with car manufacturers, electric car charging station providers, corporations, municipalities, non-government bodies and other stakeholders to make electric vehicles available to consumers. The company plans to increase is global presence of electric cars by deploying more in other countries over the coming months.
