The Hertz Corporation has revealed its “Living Journey” sustainability strategy, which will position the already largest general use car hire brand in the world as the leader in Sustainable Mobility and Equipment Solutions. This will be done through several initiatives that integrate the best sustainability practices across the company – Smart Mobility, Environment and Community.
The Smart Mobility initiative is Hertz’s commitment to deliver hire options that are fuel efficient and use low-emissions and clean technology (eg. hybrids and electric cars). The Environment initiative is the company’s goal to minimuse its carbon footprint and operating costs by improving efficiency, producing renewable energy and managing resources. The initiatives will be rolled out around the world by divisions of The Hertz Corporation – Hertz Rent A Car, Hertz Equipment Rental, Hertz Entertainment Services, Hertz On Demand and Donlen.
Hertz has even launched a HertzLivingJourney.com website to communicate the sustainability strategy to its shareholders. This is the first of its kind for the group and highlights its achievements and goals in the sustainability platform – including other energy efficiency upgrades like using LEED certification standards for buildings.
Hertz has already recycled more than 50,000 IT units to keep two million tonnes of e-waste out of landfills since 2005. Its sustainability efforts have also reduced the use of paper by 2.8 million pounds since 2006 and recycled about 680,000 gallons of oil in 2011. Additionally, it recycles over 80% of the water used at its car washes. Many of its facilities are getting energy audits and lighting upgrades, and results from the recent upgrades show 1.1 million kwh and 776 tonnes of emissions are being saved every year. The company was recognised for Sustainable Practice at its Hertz On Demand hourly car hire scheme by the Global Business Travel Association last year.
Hertz chairman and chief executive Mark P. Frissora says sustainability has always been part of Hertz’s culture. They have a long-standing tradition of leadership and innovation that includes managing the social impacts and environmental performance of the group in addition to their fiscal responsibilities.
Frissora continued that the group made great progress last year on its industry-leading solar generation and electric car initiatives, alongside ongoing efforts to operate in an environmentally accountable manner at corporate and rental offices. In continuing this, they are excited to reveal Living Journey, which envelops all of their organisation’s efforts through partnerships, investments and employee training to reduce their environmental impact, manage business sustainably and provide value to consumers.
As the biggest general use car hire brand in the world, Hertz operates from about 8,500 locations across 150 countries.
