According to a new survey done by Hertz, 1 out of every 3 men lie to their dates about the things they own. Usually this results in renting or borrowing things form friends in order to impress their dates.
Hertz, which is one of the largest car hire brands in the world, said that close to 31% of British men lie to their dates by claiming that they own things they really don’t. One of the top things that men lie about is their car. Usually this causes British men to attempt to pass off their rental car as their own.
Of course, it is not just rental cars that men try to pass off as their own. In fact, trying to pass off cars as theirs was second overall. The number one thing that men try to pass off as their own is clothing and accessories.
Although it may seem odd that someone would try and do this, British men may be on to something. Hertz also found out that nearly 40% of all women that took part in the survey said that the car that a man drives makes them more attractive. On top of that, 60% of women say that a man’s outfit can make or break the deal.
It’s interesting to point out that it isn’t only men who rent or borrow things to impress dates. One out of every 5 women that took part in the survey admitted to renting or borrowing something from a friend to impress their date as well. The survey found that this is a trend that tends to be more popular with people between the ages of 18 and 25.
As one might expect, these lies tend to get worse around Valentine’s Day. During this time of the year, people tend to rent expensive cars to try and impress their dates. The most common car rented to “impress dates” is the Lamborghini. This is followed by the Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls Royce and Ferrari.
The survey also found that there are certain towns that are a lot more likely to engage in this kind of behavior. For example, Swansea, Aberystwyth, Leeds, and Liverpool topped the list of towns most likely to try and pass of rented or borrowed things as their own. Towns that are least likely to try this include Gloucester, Cambridge, Wolverhampton and Chelmsford.
Here is a list of the most commonly borrowed or rented things to impress a date. Some of the things on this list, like pets, are a little odd:
- Clothing and Accessories
- An apartment or house
- Pets (usually cats and dogs)
- Expensive technology
This survey was started by Hertz back in January of this year. In total, over 1,000 respondents from the UK were polled. The poll itself was handled by OnePoll.com on behalf of Hertz. Although the UK was the area that was polled, Hertz does believe that the results would be the same or close to the same all over the world. So far, no similar studies have been started.
